As order is part of the pedagogy, each pieces of material have an assigned place and position on the shelves . It 's essential however that the children be able to see and retrieve without any adult assistance all the material and supplies needed to conduct any activity. The child should therefore complete his work and bring it back where he found it , this will help him to become independent.

A Montessori environment has rules, amongst them, the child has to tidy up his work, speak softly, respect his mates ....
...and so forth he can have regular duties such as watering the plants, taking care of pets ....

The material is made sufficiently pleasing and attractive to draw the child 's attention to them it is organized in 4 parts corresponding to the sensitive period : practical life, sensorial and maths and language. Each material is presented individually or collectively so that the child can manipulate it alone .

Practical life consists of developing basic personal and social skills used in daily living like polishing a shoe, cleaning plates, pouring water, closing buttons and so forth .

This allows him to try doing what adults all around may be doing each and every day , giving him the opportunity for self development. Satisfying the young child 's inner and hitherto frustrated desires for skills and for self - sufficiency as well as enhancing his muscular strength helping to prepare for writing .
